…In the field of plants, John Gerard (1545-1612) published “Herbal Medicine” and John Parkinson (1567-1650) published “Earthly Paradise”. However, the appearance of explorers and naturalists such as Pierre Belon (1517-64), JP de Tournefort, and C. von Linnaeus, as well as microscopists such as J. Swammerdam and R. Hooke, led to the production of detailed illustrations that took into account not only the external appearance but also the structure and ecology of living organisms. In particular, natural history after Linnaeus saw the establishment of a full-fledged taxonomy, and colored detailed illustrations became absolutely necessary for identifying species. …
