Roman glass

Japanese: ローマ･ガラス（英語表記）Roman glass

A general term for glassware made within the Roman Empire during the Roman period. From the invention of glassblowing techniques in the 1st century BCE in glass-producing areas on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean within the Roman Empire until the 4th century, when the Roman Empire was divided into the Eastern and Western, glass made in what is now Syria, the northern coast of Egypt, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and Britain is called Roman glass, while glass made in the Eastern and Western Roman Empires from the 5th to 6th centuries onwards is called Late Roman glass. It is sometimes called Syrian glass, Gaul glass, Frankish glass, Anglo-Saxon glass, etc., after the name of the place of production.

ローマ時代にローマ帝国領内で作られたガラス器の総称。前1世紀に吹きガラス技法がローマ帝国領内の地中海東海岸のガラス産地で発明されてから，ローマ帝国が東西に分裂する4世紀まで，現在のシリア，エジプト北岸，スペイン，イタリア，フランス，ドイツ，イギリス地方で作られたガラスをローマ･ガラスと呼び，それ以降の5～6世紀の東･西ローマ帝国領内で作られたガラスを後期ローマ･ガラスと呼ぶ。生産地の名称をつけて，シリア･ガラス，ゴール･ガラス，フランク･ガラス，アングロ･サクソン･ガラスなどと呼称されることもある。
