Epoche - Greek

The original Greek meaning of epoche is "to remain" or "to refrain from doing something". Pyrrho and other ancient skeptics used it to mean "suspension of judgment". According to them, because the positions, states, and conditions of the judges are diverse, nothing can be judged unequivocally as good or bad, or as existing or non-existent. Therefore, we have no choice but to refrain from judgment about everything, and we should do so. The modern philosopher Husserl used this epoche to express his phenomenological method. In this case, it means refraining from judgment about the existence of things in order to pave the way for describing pure consciousness.

ギリシア語のもとの意味は「とどまること」「何かをしないでおくこと」。ピュロンその他の古代懐疑主義者たちが「判断停止」の意味に用いた。彼らによれば、判断する人についても立場や状態や条件が多様であるから、何物も、一義的に善(よ)いとも悪いとも、また、あるともないとも判断できない。ゆえに、われわれは何事についても判断を差し控えるほかはなく、またそうすべきであるという。近代の哲学者フッサールは、このエポケーを、彼の現象学の方法を表現することばとして用いた。この場合は、純粋意識を記述する道を開くために、事物の存在について判断を控えることを意味する。
