A former town in Abashiri County, eastern Hokkaido. Facing Lake Abashiri, the main settlement is on the Sekihoku Main Line. The wide volcanic ash plateau produces potatoes, wheat, beans, and sugar beets. The Abashiri River lowlands are the northeastern limit of rice cultivation. Memanbetsu Airport is located here, connecting the town to Sapporo, Tokyo, and other areas. In March 2006, it merged with Higashimokoto Village, Abashiri County, to become Ozora Town, Abashiri County. Area: 159.24 km2 . Population: 5,959 (2003).
