A village in Tosa County, central north of Kochi Prefecture. Population 930 (1995). Located in the headwaters of the Yoshino River, the Ishizuchi Mountains, including Tsutsugamiyama (1,859m), Kamegamori (1,897m), Kanpusan (1,763m), and Sasagamine (1,860m), stand in the north, and the area borders Ehime Prefecture. The area from the village to the east, including Okawa Village, was once called Honkawa-go, an isolated mountainous region. In the Middle Ages, there were five local lords known as the Honkawa Goto. Terakawa is the trailhead for Mt. Ishizuchi, and "Terakawa-godan," written by Haruki, a mountain patrolman of the Tosa Domain who was stationed there in the mid-Edo period, gives a good account of the lifestyle and customs of the time, such as slash-and-burn agriculture and hunting.
