Born in Wisconsin. Obsessed with theater, he formed friendships with theater people such as J. Housman and J. Cotton in New York, directed a black version of Macbeth (1936), and founded the Mercury Theater Company (1937). On October 30, 1938, Welles produced the famous radio drama The Martians Invaded America, which caused panic throughout the United States. (It was a shocking format in which a music broadcast on CBS Radio was suddenly interrupted and an emergency news report of the landing of a spaceship was broadcast.) This brought Welles, at the age of 23, into the limelight, and he was hailed as a "child prodigy," and was welcomed to Hollywood with his theater company. While making full use of innovative film techniques such as the unprecedented pan-focus shot in Citizen Kane, the Hall of Mirrors montage in The Lady from Shanghai, and the long-lasting one-scene, one-take shots in The Great Ambersons and The Black Snare, he also wrote the original story for Chaplin's The Manslayer, and as a character actor he appeared in many films other than his own, playing strong, monstrous characters that were unique to him, culminating in his portrayal of Harry Lime in C. Reed's The Third Man (1949).
