A city in the northwest of Kumamoto Prefecture, bordering Omuta City in Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1942. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the city center, which developed as a coal mining town after the Manda Pit of the Miike Coal Mine was excavated in 1902, and in 1940 an Army Arsenal and dye factory were established here. When the coal mine closed, spinning, netting, chemicals and other industries were established in its place. It is within the commuting area of Omuta City. Pears, mandarin oranges and seaweed are also produced here. The town is home to the amusement park Mitsui Greenland, Miyazaki Toten, and the birthplace and museum of the Miyazaki brothers. 熊本県北西端,福岡県大牟田(おおむた)市に接する市。1942年市制。鹿児島本線が通じる中心市街は1902年の三池炭鉱万田(まんだ)坑開削後,炭鉱町として発展,1940年陸軍造兵廠,染料工場も立地した。炭鉱は閉山し,代わって紡績,製網,化学などの工業が立地。大牟田市の通勤圏に属している。ナシ,ミカン,ノリも産する。遊園地の三井グリーンランド,宮崎滔天など宮崎兄弟の生家・資料館がある。57.37km2。5万5321人(2010)。
