A leading American psychoanalyst, he founded the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas with his father and brother in 1925, and the Menninger School of Psychiatry in 1945. These have been the centers of psychoanalytic treatment and education, and have had a major impact on the development of dynamic psychiatry around the world. He has written many books, including Discourse on the Psychoanalytic Technique (1958), which explains psychoanalytic techniques with a focus on the therapeutic contract and therapeutic regression, Against Oneself (1938), which focuses on Freud's theory of the death instinct, as well as The Human Mind (1930) and Love and Hate (1942).

アメリカの代表的な精神分析医。1925年カンザス州トピカで，父や弟とともにメニンガー･クリニックを創設，さらに45年メニンガー精神医学校を設立した。これらは精神分析的治療と教育の中心として，世界の力動精神医学の発展に大きな影響を与えている。著作は多数に及ぶが，治療契約論と治療的退行を中心として精神分析技法を解明した《精神分析技法論》(1958)，フロイトの〈死の本能〉論に注目した《己れに背くもの》(1938)，そのほか《人間の心》(1930)，《愛憎》(1942)などが広く知られている。
