Japanese: メヌケ(目抜) - メヌケ

A general term for several species of fish in the genus Sebastes, family Scorpaenidae, order Scorpaeniformes. The name comes from the fact that their eyes pop out when they come up to the surface from the depths. Usually it refers to three species: Sebastes iracundus , S. flammeus , and S. baramenuke (illustration). Sometimes it also includes the Alaskan rockfish. All of these fish are from the northern part of the world, and are found in the deep sea off the Pacific coast of Honshu, north of Choshi, and in the Sagami Bay and Hokkaido.

カサゴ目フサカサゴ科メバル属の数種の魚の総称。深海から水面に上がってくると眼球がとび出ることに由来した名称。ふつうはオオサガ(コウジンメヌケ)Sebastes iracundus，サンコウメヌケS.flammeus，バラメヌケS.baramenuke（イラスト）の3種をいう。ときにはアラスカメヌケも含めることがある。北方系の魚で，いずれも相模灘と銚子以北の本州および北海道の太平洋岸の沖合深海域に分布する。
