Acropolis Museum - Acropolis Museum (English name)

One of the leading museums in Greece. It is built low in the southeast corner of the Acropolis in Athens so as not to spoil the view of the ruins. It was founded in 1878, and after the Second World War, it underwent extensive renovations from 1956 to 1961, giving it a completely new appearance. All of the museum's collection was excavated from the Acropolis and its surrounding areas, and it mainly consists of statues and reliefs from the Archaic to Classical periods. In particular, it has a collection of masterpieces from the Archaic period, such as the auxiliary sculptures of the old Temple of Athena, including the gable group known as "Bluebeard," the "Olive Goddess," a group of girl statues known as the "Acropolis Kore," "Young Man Carrying a Calf," "Knight of Lampan," "Blond Head," and "Boy of Kritios." Among the classical works are about a third of the Parthenon sculptures that survived the exodus, part of the pediments, and a beautiful group of reliefs, including the so-called "Mourning Athena" and "Winged Nike Untying Her Sandals."

Recently, the group statue of "Athena Slaying the Titans" has been exhibited, and in connection with the dismantling and repair of the Erechtheion, the famous caryatids have been removed and moved inside the museum.

ギリシアの代表的美術館の一つ。アテネのアクロポリスの南東隅に、遺跡の景観を損なわぬように低く建てられている。創建は1878年で、第二次世界大戦後1956年から1961年にかけて大規模な改修が加えられ、面目を一新した。収蔵品はすべてアクロポリスおよびその周辺から出土したもので、アルカイック期からクラシック期に至る彫像、浮彫りを主とする。とくに「青ひげ」と通称される破風(はふ)群像をはじめとする旧アテナ神殿の付属彫刻、小祠堂(しどう)の破風を飾ったと思われる『オリーブの女神』、『アクロポリスのコレー』とよばれる一群の少女像、『仔牛(こうし)を担う青年』『ランパンの騎士』『金髪の頭像』『クリティオスの少年』など、アルカイック期の名作がそろっている。クラシック期の作品としては、パルテノンの彫刻のうち国外流出を免れた分、フリーズの約3分の1と破風群像の一部がある。ほかに、いわゆる『哀悼のアテナ』『サンダルの紐(ひも)を解くニケ』など美しい浮彫りの一群がある。

　なお、最近、『巨人を倒すアテナ』の群像が公開され、またエレクテイオンの解体修理に伴って、有名な女像柱(カリアティード)が取り外され館内に移されている。
