Jumonji Pass - Jumonji Pass

A pass located at the western edge of Saitama Prefecture. It connects Tochimoto in the Otaki district of Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, and Azusayama in Kawakami Village, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture. It is about 2000 meters above sea level. In the past, the Shinshu Highway, a back road connecting the Nakasendo and Koshu Kaido, passed through here, and there was a checkpoint at Tochimoto. The name Jumonji comes from the fact that the pass road and the ridge road cross in a cross shape. Between Tochimoto and Azusayama, stone Kannon statues were built every ri as signposts and to pray for safe travels, and they still remain today, evoking memories of those days. It is now a hiking course for Kobushigatake, and is crowded with climbers, especially in the summer. The surrounding area is virgin forest of Fir Veitchii and Fir Veitchii, and the Jumonji hut was built in a section of the virgin forest on the Chichibu side.

埼玉県西端にある峠。埼玉県秩父市(ちちぶし)大滝(おおたき)地区栃本(とちもと)と長野県南佐久郡川上村梓山(あずさやま)とを結ぶ。標高約2000メートル。かつては中山道(なかせんどう)と甲州街道を結ぶ裏街道の信州往還が通った所で、通行者が多く、栃本には関所があった。十文字の名は峠道と尾根道が十文字に交差することによる。栃本と梓山の間には、旅の安全祈願と道標として、石造観音(かんのん)が1里ごとにつくられたが、現在も残っていて、当時のおもかげをしのばせる。いまは甲武信ヶ岳(こぶしがたけ)の登山コースとなっており、夏を中心に登山者でにぎわう。付近はシラビソ、オオシラビソなどの原生林で、秩父側の原生林を切り開き十文字小屋が建てられている。
