Japanese: ツノゴケ - つのごけ

A class of mosses. The gametophyte has characteristics common to green algae, and the sporophyte has characteristics common to primitive ferns, and they occupy an important position in the phylogenetic system related to the origin of land plants. The gametophyte is leaf-like and has a simple structure, in which cyanobacteria live symbiotically. Each cell has one or several large chloroplasts. The archegonia is not exposed but is buried within the tissue. The rhizoids are unicellular. The sporophyte is elongated and cylindrical with a pointed tip (the name hornwort is based on this shape of the sporophyte). Growth continues by a persistent meristematic tissue at the base.

コケ植物の1綱。配偶体は緑藻類に，また胞子体は原始的なシダ植物に共通する特徴をもち，陸上植物の起原にかかわる系統上の重要な位置をしめる。配偶体は葉状で構造は単純，内部にラン藻類が共生する。各細胞は1個または数個の大型の葉緑体をもつ。造卵器は裸出せず組織内にうずもれている。仮根は単細胞。胞子体は細長く円柱状で先端はとがる(ツノゴケの名は胞子体のこの形状に基づく)。基部に宿存する分裂組織によって生長を続ける。
