South Carolina

Japanese: サウス･カロライナ[州]（英語表記）South Carolina

A state on the Atlantic coast of the southern United States. It is one of the 13 independent states. Its area is 80,432 km2, and its population is 3.7 million (1996). Its capital and largest city is Columbia. The state is named after King Charles I (Carolus in Latin). The Appalachian Mountains occupy the northwestern part of the state, and the elevation gradually decreases to the southeast, passing through the Piedmont Plateau and continuing to the low-lying Coastal Plain. It has a humid, warm climate, very similar to that of southwestern Japan, with hot and humid summers, but the annual precipitation is somewhat low at 1,000 to 1,200 mm.

アメリカ合衆国南部，大西洋岸の州。略称S.C.。独立13州の一つ。面積8万0432km2，人口370万(1996)。州都および最大都市コロンビア。州名はイギリス王チャールズ1世(ラテン語でカロルス)にちなむ。アパラチア山脈が北西部を占め，南東方向にしだいに標高が低下し，ピードモント台地を経て，低平なコースタル･プレーン(海岸平野)へと続く。湿潤温暖気候で西南日本とよく似ており，夏は蒸し暑いが，年降水量は1000～1200mmでやや少ない。
