Arkose (English spelling)

It was first used by Cordier to describe the Mesozoic rocks surrounding the Massif Central in Aubergne, France [Cordier: 1819]. It was further described by Brongniart from a stratigraphic point of view, who described the coarse-grained, feldspar-rich sandstones of the region [Brongniart: 1826]. Today, the term arkose is no longer used in a stratigraphic sense, but is used to describe sandstones that contain significant amounts of feldspar and quartz. In general, a clay matrix is rare. Arkose often contains potassium feldspar, giving it a red or pink color, and the rocks resemble granite in appearance. There is little agreement on the percentage of feldspar required to call an arkose sandstone, but it usually contains more than 25% detrital grains. Most authors recommend a value of 40-50%. The name subarkose is used for rocks with a feldspar content between 5-25%. The parent rocks of arkose are generally granite or granite-like rocks, and some are formed by in situ decomposition of rocks.

最初にコルディエルがフランスのオーベルニュ（Aubergne）の中央高地（Massif Centrale）をとりまく中生代の岩石の記載に使用した［Cordier : 1819］．さらにブロニヤールが層位学的な観点から記載し，この地域の粗粒で長石に富む砂岩とした［Brongniart : 1826］．現在ではアルコースは層位学的な見方では使われておらず，かなりの量の長石に石英が含まれる砂岩に用いられている．一般に粘土質のマトリクスは稀である．アルコースはしばしばカリ長石を含んで赤色または桃色となり，外見は花崗岩に似た岩石となる．アルコース砂岩というために必要な長石の比率は人により意見が一致していないが，破砕粒が25％よりも多いのが普通である．多くの研究者は40～50％を薦めている．長石量が5～25％の間のものはsubarkoseという名称が用いられている．アルコースの原岩は一般に花崗岩または花崗岩に似た岩石で，岩石がその場で分解して形成されたものもある．
