American literary and art critic. Born in New York. From the 1930s, he discussed art in general from a flexible left-wing perspective, but is known for naming the abstract paintings of J. Pollock and W. de Kooning that emerged in America immediately after World War II as "action painting" and analyzing them with dynamic logic. He continued to write art exhibition reviews in the weekly magazine "The New Yorker" that were not swayed by trends. He was the first to assert the importance of American art in the postwar period, and his works include "The Tradition of the New" (1959), which contains the groundbreaking essay "American Action Painters," "Uneasy Objects" (1966), and "The Wilderness Swallowed by the Vase" (1969). In addition to art criticism, he was active in a wide range of fields, including literature and politics, and has written many books. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
