Umar Khayyām

Iranian poet, astronomy, mathematician, medicine, and scientist. Also known as Omar Khayyam. Born in Nishapur, he was appointed to the court of Seljuk Sultan Malik Shah at the age of 26. He left behind many scientific books and an accurate calendar called the Maliki or Jalali calendar. He is also said to have written the Book of New Year, which describes the history and rituals of the Iranian New Year (Nowruz). His Rubaiyat (a collection of quatrains), which is said to contain anywhere from 100 to 2000 poems, became known worldwide in the late 19th century through a brilliant translation by the British poet E. Fitzgerald.

イランの詩人，天文学･数学･医学･科学者。オマル･ハイヤームとも呼ばれる。ニーシャープールに生まれ，26歳でセルジューク朝のスルタン，マリク･シャーの宮廷に登用された。多くの科学書をはじめ，《マリキー暦》あるいは《ジャラーリー暦》と呼ばれる正確な暦を残す。イランの新年(ノウルーズ)の歴史･祭祀を記した《新春の書》も彼の著作といわれる。100首から2000首まで，さまざまの説がある彼の《ルバーイヤート(四行詩集)》は，19世紀末にイギリスの詩人E.フィッツジェラルドの名訳によって全世界に知られている。
