1048‐1131 Iranian poet, astronomy, mathematician, medicine, and scientist. Also known as Omar Khayyam. Born in Nishapur, he was appointed to the court of Seljuk Sultan Malik Shah at the age of 26. He left behind many scientific books and an accurate calendar called the Maliki or Jalali calendar. He is also said to have written the Book of New Year, which describes the history and rituals of the Iranian New Year (Nowruz). His Rubaiyat (a collection of quatrains), which is said to contain anywhere from 100 to 2000 poems, became known worldwide in the late 19th century through a brilliant translation by the British poet E.
