…It is a dual port with an artificial bay on both sides connected to the island of Pharos by a large jetty (heptastadion) of about 1.3 km, and the "Great Port" on the east side and the port of Eunostos (which also housed the fleet facility, the Kibotos Anchorage) on the west side, but today the roles of the two ports are reversed. At the eastern end of Pharos stood a large stone lighthouse (completed around 279 BC, by Sōstratos) about 110 meters high, which was counted as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, but it collapsed in 1326, and the 15th century fortress of Qait Bay now stands there. In French, a lighthouse is still called a phare. …
