He was born into a Russian noble family. His elder brother Ivan Vasil'evich Kireevskii (1806-56) was a leading Slavophile. In the mid-1820s, he studied Schelling's philosophy at Prince V.F. Odoevsky's Philosophical Society, and was influenced by German Romanticism. In 1830, he traveled to Germany to study, where he became acquainted with Schelling and Hegel. In 1832, he founded the magazine "European" and wrote the lead article "The Nineteenth Century," in which he advocated the unification of Russia with Western Europe as a Christian world. However, the authorities interpreted this Westernization as constitutionalism, and the magazine was suspended after the second issue, and Kireevskii himself was ordered to live in seclusion.
