Also called methanol or wood alcohol. Chemical formula: CH 3 OH. Has an odor similar to ethyl alcohol. Poisonous, with 8-20 g causing blindness and 30-50 g causing death. Colorless, volatile, flammable liquid. Boiling point: 64°C. Produced industrially from carbon monoxide and hydrogen by high-pressure contact. The simplest molecule among alcohol homologues. When oxidized, it becomes formaldehyde, and when further oxidized, it breaks down into formic acid, and then into carbon dioxide and water. Raw material for organic synthesis (methylation reaction). Used as an analytical reagent, solvent, and fuel, and as a denaturing agent for ethyl alcohol.
