Kita Kusunose

A supporter of the civil rights movement in the Meiji period. Born in Kochi Castle town. After her husband died in 1874 (Meiji 7), she remained a widow. She sympathized with and supported the civil rights movement of Risshisha, and in the early 1910s, influential civil rights activists from all over the country stayed in Kochi to visit Itagaki Taisuke and others. She kindly looked after many civil rights activists, including Kono Hironaka, Sugita Sadakazu, and Toyama Mitsuru, who later became famous, and earned the nickname "Civil Rights Granny." She is said to have spent the rest of her life immersed in chanting Buddhist prayers at Yohoji Temple in Ushioe Village.

明治期の民権運動支援者。高知城下に生まれた。明治7(1874)年,夫に先立たれてのち,寡婦で通した。立志社の民権運動に共感して支援,10年代初頭には全国から有力な民権運動家が板垣退助らを訪ねて高知に滞在したが,後年有名になった河野広中,杉田定一,頭山満ら多くの民権運動家を親身になって世話し,「民権ばあさん」の愛称を得た。潮江村要法寺で念仏三昧の余生を送ったという。
