Year of death: October 18, 1920 Year of birth: Tempo 7.9.9 (1836.10.18) A supporter of the civil rights movement in the Meiji period. Born in Kochi Castle town. After her husband died in 1874 (Meiji 7), she remained a widow. She sympathized with and supported the civil rights movement of Risshisha, and in the early 1910s, influential civil rights activists from all over the country stayed in Kochi to visit Itagaki Taisuke and others. She kindly looked after many civil rights activists, including Kono Hironaka, Sugita Sadakazu, and Toyama Mitsuru, who later became famous, and earned the nickname "Civil Rights Granny." She is said to have spent the rest of her life immersed in chanting Buddhist prayers at Yohoji Temple in Ushioe Village.
