Fushimi Magistrate

A job title in the Edo Shogunate. One of the magistrates of distant provinces. He ruled over Fushimi-juku in Yamashiro Province (Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City) and the eight villages surrounding Fushimi. The Fushimi magistrate is a descendant of the government office established in Fushimi by Kobori Masakazu (Enshu), who played an important role in governing the Kinai region and nearby provinces during the Edo Shogunate's establishment. In 1666 (Kanbun 6), under Mizuno Tadasada, the system of the Fushimi magistrate was established, and in addition to governing Fushimi-cho and other areas, he was responsible for governing major rivers such as the Uji River and Yodo River, monitoring the daimyo of the western provinces who were on alternate attendance tours, and guarding Kyoto. For this reason, although it was unusual for a magistrate of distant provinces to be appointed, a person of high status was appointed as the magistrate. There was a capacity of one person.

江戸幕府の職名。遠国(おんごく)奉行の一つ。山城(やましろ)国伏見宿（京都市伏見区）と伏見廻(まわ)り八か村を支配した。江戸幕府成立期の畿内(きない)近国支配に重要な役目を果たした小堀政一(こぼりまさかず)（遠州(えんしゅう)）が伏見に置いた政庁の流れが、伏見奉行へと連なる。1666年（寛文6）水野忠貞(たださだ)のときに伏見奉行としての職制が整えられ、伏見町などの支配のほか、宇治川、淀(よど)川などの大川支配や参勤交代の西国大名の監視、京都の警備などにあたった。このため遠国奉行としては異例であるが、身分の高い大名格の者が任命された。定員1名。
