Saionji Kinhira

Japanese:
Saionji Kinhira

He was a nobleman in the late Kamakura period. His father was Daijo-daijin Sanekane. His mother was Naidaijin Nakain Michinari's daughter Akiko. He was called Chikurin-in Nyudo Sadaijin. After serving as chamberlain and Sachujo, he was promoted to Junior Third Rank in 1276 (Kenji 2), Gon Chunagon in 1283 (Kōan 6), Gon Dainagon in 1288 (Shoō 1), Naidaijin in 1298 (Einin 6), and Udaijin in 1299 (Shoan 1). In the same year, he succeeded his father Sanekane as Kanto Moushitsugi. He was promoted to Sadaijin in 1309 (Enkei 2), but resigned from his position that same year and became a monk in 1311 (Ochō 1) (under the Buddhist name Seisho). During the period of the alternating succession of the two imperial lines, he was close to the Daikakuji line, but he also took actions that displeased Emperor Kameyama and Emperor Go-Uda, which led to a period when he was close to the Jimyoin line, making his political position somewhat unstable. His diary, "Konko-Koki" (owned by the Imperial Household Agency Archives and Mausolea Department), is a valuable historical document that conveys the state of negotiations between the Imperial Court and the military in the late Kamakura period. He is also known for creating the "Kasuga Gongen Genki Emaki" scroll and donating it to Kasuga Shrine. He died on September 25, 1315 (Showa 4).
