Lantern - Gandou

It is also written as Gandou (robber). It is an abbreviation of chochin (robber's lantern). It is one of the portable lighting devices invented in the Edo period, and its new design was a double-ringed candle holder that could rotate freely inside a barrel-shaped body. There was a handle at the bottom of the body, and no matter which direction it was held and pointed, the new candle holder's design meant that the candle always remained vertical and the light shone in only one direction. It is said to have been used by robbers, or by detectives searching for robbers. In the Meiji period, copper and tin versions also appeared.

強盗(がんどう)とも書く。強盗提灯(ちょうちん)の略。江戸時代に発明された携帯用の灯火具の一つで、桶(おけ)状の胴の中に二重の輪でできた自在に回転するろうそく立てがつけられたのが新しいくふうである。胴の底部に把(と)っ手がつき、これを持ってどのような方向に向けても、その新しいろうそく立てのくふうにより、ろうそくはつねに垂直の状態を保ち、光は一方向だけを照らすことができた。強盗が用いたとも、目明しなどが強盗の捜索に使用したともいう。明治時代になってからは銅製やブリキ製のものも現れた。
