Born as the third son of San'emon, a shipping merchant in Shimizuminato, Awatari County, Suruga Province, he was later adopted by his mother's younger brother, Yamamoto Jirohachi, a rice merchant. His real name was Yamamoto Chogoro, and Jirocho was his nickname. He had a violent nature from an early age. When his adoptive father died in 1835 (Tenpo 6), he inherited the family business. In 1841, he joined a group of gamblers, gained fame, and had many subordinates. Due to territorial disputes, he frequently fought with Hisaroku of Yaogagoku in Owari, Katsuzo of Kurokoma in Koshu, and Ano Toku of Ise. In 1868 (Meiji 1), when he traveled east to overthrow the shogunate, he was ordered by the Tokaido Government Headquarters to investigate along the way and was allowed to carry a sword. ...
