The capital of Tamaulipas state on the Atlantic coast of northeastern Mexico. Population 194,996 (1990). Surrounded by vegetable and large-scale sisal plantations, it is the center of a fertile agricultural region. Founded in 1750, its former name was Aguayo, and was changed to its current name in 1825.
