A cone-shaped volcano in the northwest of Nagano City. It is also written as Iizunayama. It has an elevation of 1,917 meters, but the Iizuna Plateau at the base is about 1,000 meters high, so it can be easily climbed from the base in about two hours. It is included in Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park. It erupted on a tertiary tuff layer, and Iizuna Shrine is located near the summit, and a dozen ponds of various sizes are scattered in the depressions of the plateau. It has been a training ground for ascetic monks since the Kamakura period. It is also said to be the birthplace of Iizuna Ninpo. There are only small trees on the summit, but the foothills are covered with a sea of larch trees. From the top, you can see Mt. Asama, the Yatsugatake mountain range, and the Northern Alps in their entirety, making it a wonderful place to relax. A ski resort has been opened on the mountainside, and the foothills are a large area of villas, making it a recreational spot for Nagano citizens.
