...The pappus is sometimes used as cotton for vermilion ink. There are about 45 species of sow thistle in the world, and the other species in Japan are S. asper (L.) Hill and S. brachyotis DC. Sonchus is a naturalized plant native to Europe, and in recent years has expanded its distribution to wastelands around cities.
