Located on the southern bank of the Romanche River at the northern end of the Ecrins (or Pérbous) massif, one of the crystalline rock mountains in the French Alps, this mountain consists of three peaks: the East Peak (3,890m), the Central Peak (3,974m), and the West Peak (or Grand Pic, 3,983m). It was first climbed on August 16, 1877, by Boileau de Castelnau and his guide Gaspard and his son. It belongs to Ecrins National Park, and its saw-like rock peaks rise above the existing glaciers.
