Gorgias

Gorgias
Born around 483 BC. Leontini, Sicily.
[Died] c. 376 BC. Thessaly, Larissa. A leading Greek sophist and orator. During the Peloponnesian War, he traveled to Athens as the representative of a diplomatic mission from his hometown, which was under pressure from Syracuse, to ask for help (427 BC). Later, he returned to Greece and became a teacher of rhetoric, settling there permanently. His surviving rhetorical works include Helenēs enkōmion and Palamēdēs. His lost philosophical work Peri physeōs heē peri tou mē ontos (On Nature, or What Does Not Exist) is an attempt to prove that "nothing exists, and if it does exist, we cannot know it, and even if we could know it, we could not communicate our knowledge to others." He appears in Plato's Gorgias, where his flashy and pedantic manner is mockingly described.
