A servant's good advice - めしっこってる

Japanese: 召使のよい忠告 - めしつかいのよいちゅうこく

In Japan, this story is called "Hanashi Senryo" (a thousand stories worth of rice), and is a type of old tale about how to get along in life. A man is employed as a servant in a faraway place and receives three pieces of advice from his master. The contents of the advice vary, but the main ones are quite specific, such as not visiting friends too often, not marrying a girl from a faraway place, not leaving your precious livestock in the care of others, not straying from good roads, repeating the Lord's Prayer when you feel angry, and iron is more valuable than gold. This story is thought to have originated in the Orient. It is found in areas from the Himalayas to Africa, and had already reached Europe by the early Middle Ages.

日本では〈話千両〉と呼ばれている話で，処世術の昔話の型。男が遠い所で奉公して，主人から三つの忠告を受ける。その内容は多様だが，おもなものをあげると，友人をあまりしばしば訪ねるな，遠い所の娘と結婚するな，たいせつな家畜を他人に預けるな，よい道路からはずれるな，腹がたったら主の祈りを繰り返せ，鉄は金より貴重である，などかなり具体的なものが多い。この話の起源はオリエントにあると考えられている。ヒマラヤからアフリカまで分布しており，中世初期にはすでにヨーロッパに達していた。
