Messier Star Catalogue
A list of nebulae and star clusters created by the Frenchman C. Messier. In 1771, he listed 45 objects, which were gradually added to in 1781, bringing the total to 103. Even today, famous nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters are often referred to by their catalog symbols (with the letter M at the beginning).
