Ichikawa Danjuro (10th generation)

...The name Soshian was given to him by Fujitani Munehito of the Urasenke school. Composing kouta was a hobby of the sophisticated people of the time, but he joined the group at the recommendation of his friend, the kabuki actor Ichikawa Mishou (the 10th Ichikawa Danjūrō, who also wrote kouta lyrics), and composed nearly 300 kouta songs. Because he had a background in nagauta and kiyomoto, his style incorporated geza music in the instrumental parts, and his songs were characterized by a Bungo-bushi style of melody. Moreover, many of his works included a "prelude" (not found in ordinary kouta) that was intended for an entrance onto the kabuki dance stage, and a "sending" that was intended for an entrance from the stage....

…草紙庵の名は裏千家藤谷宗仁から与えられた雅号である。小唄の作曲は，当時の粋人の趣味であったが，友人の歌舞伎俳優市川三升(10世市川団十郎，小唄の作詩もした)の勧めでその仲間に入り，300曲近い小唄を作曲した。長唄と清元の下地があるため，作風は器楽部分に下座（げざ）音楽をとり入れ，唄は豊後節系の節回しが特徴であり，しかも，歌舞伎舞踊の舞台への出（で）を想定した〈前弾き〉(普通の小唄にはない)と，舞台からの入（いり）を想定した〈送り〉の付いている作品が多い。…
