Ono Gado - Ono Gado

Japanese: 小野鵞堂 - おのがどう
Ono Gado - Ono Gado

A calligrapher of the Meiji and Taisho periods. He was the son of Ono Seiemon Shigeaki, a martial arts instructor in Fujieda, Suruga Province (Shizuoka Prefecture). His given name was Kannosuke. His pen name was Magane. His pen name was Gadō. He also had other pen names such as Konohana-no-ya and Niyanagi-kyo-shujin. When he was a boy, his father died, and he moved to Tokyo to become a clerk at the Ministry of Finance, where he supported his family and, through hard work, eventually established a family. He published "Kokinshu Jo" (Preface to the Kokinshu) in 1890 (Meiji 23), and the following year he began working at the Peerage Girls' School (later known as Joshi Gakuin), where he worked diligently for over 30 years, his whole life. During that time, he was an active member of the Naniwa-tsu-kai (established in 1890), which was the foundation for the revival of the ancient kana style of the Meiji and Taisho periods, along with Tadashinai Tada and Shugyo Oguchi, and he himself founded the Konohanaka-kai and worked to promote calligraphy. His style of calligraphy was original, elegant, and clear, and was self-taught using ancient calligraphy texts and ancient brushes, and was publicized under the name of the Gadō-ryū style.
