A passerine bird of the honeyeater family (illustration). Total length about 14 cm. At first glance, it is a small bird that resembles a Japanese white-eye (family Eriodontidae), with a dark olive greyish back and yellow undersides. Unlike the Japanese white-eye, its forehead, area around the eyes, and face are black. Its body is slightly larger than that of a Japanese white-eye, and its beak and legs are also much larger and stronger. It is endemic to the Ogasawara Islands, and is said to inhabit the Mukojima Islands, Hahajima Islands, and Chichijima Islands, but appears to be extinct outside of the Hahajima Islands. On Hahajima Island, it lives in virgin forests and near villages, and can also be seen in coastal scrub. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
