Kale (Hagoromokanran) is a type with crepe-like leaves, and collard (Kakibakanran) is a type without crepe-like leaves, but there is no clear distinction between the two, and they are generally called kale. There are many types, and those with swollen stems are called marrow kale, and those with upright stems are called tree kale. Kale was introduced to Japan during the Edo period, but did not develop as an edible crop, and modern kale was reintroduced after the Meiji period. Young leaves are picked and used in stews and salads, and recently they are also grown in ordinary households for green juice. It is also used as animal feed.
