Kumamoto Band - Kumamoto Band

Japanese:
Kumamoto Band - Kumamoto Band

A group of Protestant Christians formed among students of the Kumamoto Foreign School in the early Meiji period. Under the strong influence of their American teacher Janes, they studied the Bible, were baptized, and with a firm determination to save their country through Christianity, signed and pledged the Mission Statement at Hanaokayama in the outskirts of Kumamoto in 1876 (Meiji 9). Among the 35 members were Miyagawa Tsuneteru (1857-1936), Kanamori Tsurin, Ebina Danjo, Tokutomi Soho, and Yokoi Tokio, many of whom later studied at Doshisha University and became associated with the Congregational Church. What they had in common was a passion for their faith as well as a sincere sense of mission and responsibility towards the society of their homeland, Japan, which led to the production of talented people who would play an active role not only in the religious world but also in the political, financial, and intellectual circles.
