A general term for small, worm-shaped snakes belonging to the Typhlopidae family. Approximately 160 species are known. They are widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, East Africa, Madagascar, Australia, and the islands of Oceania, and have been artificially distributed as far as Hawaii and Mexico. They are 14 to 18 cm long, with a body shape that is exactly like an earthworm, uniform in thickness from head to tail, and a slightly pointed tail tip. They have no abdominal plate, and are covered with smooth, fine scales of the same size except for the head. Their eyes are small and degenerate, and are hidden under the scales.
