House of Orange-Nassau - Oranje-Nassau (English spelling)
The royal family of the Netherlands (Kingdom of the Netherlands). The Counts of Nassau were the lords of Dillenburg on the middle Rhine in Germany, and their origins date back to before the 12th century. In the 14th and 15th centuries, they acquired successive territories in the Netherlands, established their castle in Breda, and served the Duke of Burgundy, becoming the most prestigious noble family in the region. In the first half of the 16th century, Nassau's eldest son, Hendrick (Henrich) III, inherited territories on the left bank of the Rhine, including the Netherlands, served the House of Habsburg, and acquired the Duchy of Orange in southern France through marriage.
