Shigemasa Itakura

In the early Edo period, he was a close attendant to Tokugawa Ieyasu and the lord of Fukamizo Domain in Mikawa Province (Koda Town, Aichi Prefecture). He was the third son of Itakura Katsushige, and his mother was the daughter of Kuriu Nagakatsu. He was Shigemune's younger brother. He was commonly known as Uemon or Sui. Uchizensho. He began serving Ieyasu at the age of 16 in 1603, and later won the trust of Ieyasu as a close attendant along with Akimoto Yasutomo and Matsudaira Masatsuna. He was involved in the incident involving the inscription on the bell at Hokoji Temple, which sparked the Winter Siege of Osaka in 1614, and served in both the Winter and Summer Sieges of Osaka. He was praised as a person of outstanding calibre, surpassing even Shigemune (Suo no Kami), and was nicknamed "Crimson Uchizen," meaning superior to the color of sapphire. In 1624, he was given a share of his father Katsushige's estate and became a daimyo, later receiving a stipend of 15,000 koku. In 1614, he marched to Kyushu to suppress the Shimabara Rebellion. Upon receiving news that reinforcements were being sent, he decided not to wait for them and instead launched an all-out attack on New Year's Day the following year, and was killed in battle.

江戸前期,徳川家康の近習出頭人,三河国深溝藩(愛知県幸田町)藩主。板倉勝重の3男で,母は栗生永勝の娘。重宗の実弟。通称宇右衛門,主水。内膳正。慶長8(1603)年16歳のときから家康につかえ,のち秋元泰朝,松平正綱と共に近習出頭人として厚い信任を受ける。19年大坂冬の陣の契機となった方広寺の鐘銘事件に関与し,大坂冬,夏の両陣にも従軍。重宗(周防守)をも凌ぐ出色の人物と評され,蘇芳色に勝るとの意味で「臙脂内膳」と称された。寛永1(1624)年父勝重の遺領を分知されて大名となり,のち1万5000石。14年島原の一揆制圧のため九州に出陣。援軍派遣の知らせを受け,敢えて援軍を待たずに翌年元旦,総攻撃をかけて戦死。
