Branded variety - Meigarahinshu

Japanese: 銘柄品種 - めいがらひんしゅ

This refers to rice of superior quality among special varieties of rice (non-glutinous rice, brewing rice) from special production areas. It is also called brand rice. It is determined according to the Agricultural Products Inspection Law and has a high market value. In the past, wheat and other varieties were also designated, but now only rice is. The aim is to recognize specific varieties grown and produced in specific regions as having good quality and to give them a brand name, and currently there are designated regional variety brands. For example, Sasanishiki produced in Miyagi Prefecture is designated.

特別な産地の特別な米の品種(うるち米，醸造米)のうちで優れた品質をもつものをいう。銘柄米ともいう。農産物検査法の定めるところによって決まっているもので，市場価値が高い。かつては麦類も指定されていたが，現在は米だけである。特定の地域で栽培，産出された特定の品種は，よい品質をもっているということを銘柄として認めようとするもので，現在は産地品種銘柄というものが指定されている。例えば宮城県産ササニシキというような指定のしかたである。
