Japanese: 目∥眼 - め（英語表記）eye

The term refers to the sensory organs in animals that receive light stimuli, but may exclude those that cannot see form, such as the scattered cutaneous photoreceptor. Eyes are broadly divided into the median eye, located on or near the midline of the body, and the lateral eyes, located on both sides of the body. The parietal eye of reptiles and cyclostomes and the dorsal ocelli of adult insects are median eyes.

The structure and function of the eyes of invertebrates vary greatly depending on the species. The most primitive type is the light-sensitive eyespot found in the single-celled protozoan Euglena.
