A gold mining town in the Free State (formerly the Orange Free State), Republic of South Africa. It is located about 110 km north of the provincial capital, Bloemfontein. It has a population of 203,296 (1996). It developed due to six newly discovered gold mines (Welkom, Western Holdings, St. Helena, President Stein, President Brandt, and Free State Gedard) that were discovered after World War II. Shops and residential areas are lined up in a ring around the town square. [Akifumi Hayashi] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
