Born: March 1, 1896, Athens [Died] November 2, 1960. Milan. American conductor born in Greece. Studied at the Athens Conservatory, he became assistant conductor of the Berlin State Opera and conductor of the Athens Symphony Orchestra, and also served as professor and director of his alma mater. In 1936, he was invited to the United States as conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and served as conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1937 to 1949, and as music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1951 to 1958. During that time, he gained American citizenship in 1946, and gained worldwide fame, including conducting operas at the Metropolitan Opera, until his death, when he conducted at La Scala in Milan.
