Born: March 1, 1896, Athens
[Died] November 2, 1960. Milan. American conductor born in Greece. Studied at the Athens Conservatory, he became assistant conductor of the Berlin State Opera and conductor of the Athens Symphony Orchestra, and also served as professor and director of his alma mater. In 1936, he was invited to the United States as conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and served as conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1937 to 1949, and as music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1951 to 1958. During that time, he gained American citizenship in 1946, and gained worldwide fame, including conducting operas at the Metropolitan Opera, until his death, when he conducted at La Scala in Milan.

ギリシア生れのアメリカの指揮者。アテネ音楽院に学び，ベルリン国立歌劇場副指揮者，アテネ交響楽団指揮者となり，かたわら母校の教授，院長などもつとめた。 1936年にボストン交響楽団の指揮者としてアメリカに招かれ，37～49年はミネアポリス交響楽団の指揮者をつとめ，51～58年ニューヨーク・フィルハーモニー交響楽団の音楽監督に就任。その間，46年にアメリカ市民権を得，メトロポリタン歌劇場でオペラ指揮をするなど世界的に名を高め，ミラノのスカラ座での指揮を最後に世を去った。
