A Brazilian archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of six main volcanic islands and 14 smaller islands. It is located about 300 km northeast of Natal on the northeast coast of Brazil. It has a total area of 26 km2 and a population of about 3,000. The highest point is Pico at 321 m. The climate is similar to that of the northeast coast of Brazil, but the forests have been destroyed by excessive logging and strong winds. It was discovered in the early 16th century and named after the person who granted it the title. After Brazilian independence, it was used as a prison. It is currently under the jurisdiction of the military. Its economic activities are mainly livestock farming and guano collection (reserves of 1 million tons).
