Murayama Matasaburo

He was the founder of the Edo Murayama-za (later the Ichimura-za) in the early Edo period. He had been an actor in Kyoto, but came down to Edo to teach the arts, and in 1634 (Kan'ei 11), he began performing in Kamisakaimachi (Ningyocho). In 1635 (or 1636), he welcomed his younger brother Sakon, who played a female role, and then, with permission from the shogunate, built a turret and renamed it Ichimura-za in 1647.

江戸初期の江戸村山座(のちの市村座)の創始者。京で役者をしていたが,芸指南のため江戸へ下り,寛永11(1634)年,上堺町(人形町)で興行を開始。同15年(17年とも),女形の弟左近を迎えてのち,幕府の許可を得て櫓をあげ,同20年市村座と改称。
