This rifle was designed by Major General Murata Tsuneyoshi, and was the first domestically produced rifle to be adopted as standard by the Japanese Army. In 1880 (Meiji 13), the Murata Type 13 rifle was developed based on the French Gras rifle and the Dutch Beaumont rifle. It was a bolt-action, single-shot rifle with a caliber of 11 mm, a total length of 1294 mm, a weight of 4 kg, and a range of 1500 meters. In 1885, some improvements were made to the Murata Type 18 rifle, and these were used in the Sino-Japanese War. Soon after the establishment of the Type 18 rifle, the era of smokeless powder repeating rifles began, and Murata Tsuneyoshi also completed the Murata Type 22 repeating rifle (caliber 8 mm, total length 1220 mm, weight 4 kg, range of 2000 meters) in 1889, which was adopted.
