The sack of Rome occurred in 1527 during the Italian Wars. A group of hungry German mercenaries under the command of Georg von Furnsberg crossed the Alps in November 1526. They were joined by the Duke of Bourbon, who was in control of Milan at the time, and formed a mob of 22,000 men, who committed plundering in various places, before breaking into the walls of Rome on May 6, 1527. Pope Clement VII took refuge in Castel Sant'Angelo, and the entire city of Rome was left to the plundering, violence, murder, and destruction of the mob.
