A forest botanist. Born in Tajima Province, in what is now Izushi Town, Hyogo Prefecture (now Toyooka City). From 1879, he conducted surveys of forest plant zones as part of the Forestry Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs' Geographical Bureau, dividing the zones into five zones and examining the relationship between temperature, precipitation, altitude, and other factors. In 1885, he compiled the results in the Report on the Survey of the Flora of Greater Japan. 森林植物学者。但馬国,現在の兵庫県出石(いずし)町(現・豊岡市)の生れ。1879年から内務省地理局山林課の事業として森林植物帯の調査を実施,5区に分けてそれぞれ気温・雨量・高度などとの関係を調べ,1885年に《大日本植物帯調査報告》としてまとめた。1887年にはドイツの森林植物学者マイヤーの教示を得て《校正大日本植物帯調査報告》を完成。
