Suite (English: Suite)

A form of instrumental music in Western music. (1) A Baroque suite is an instrumental piece consisting of several movements (often dances) in the same key. It generally includes four types of dance (allemande, courante, sarabande, gigue), as well as various dances and titled pieces. (2) After 1850, the term came to refer to a collection of excerpts from an opera or ballet, or titled pieces.

The term suite was not established until the 1790s, and until then, the names of the dances were written in parallel. Other names such as ordre, pièce de clavecin, and partita were also used in parallel. However, the idea of ​​a series of dances had existed since the 14th century, and in the 16th century, a pair of a quiet dance in duple time and a lively dance in tertium time was popular (for example, the pavane and the gaillarde). Italian lute music also had combinations of three or four types. In Germany in the 1610s, a series of instrumental ensembles were published, in which the same number of dances were always arranged in the same order. However, it was French lutenists who established the combination of allemande, courante, and sarabande from among the new types of dances that became popular in the 17th century. Around 1650, the gigue was added to this. These four combinations were favored by French club-songwriters (Chambonnières, Louis and François Couperin, Rameau), and spread to Germany through Froberger, becoming the most standard form of suites. However, French suites have a prelude and multiple courantes, a gigue followed by various pieces, and end with a minuet or chaconne. The number of inserted pieces is not fixed, and there is no relationship between each piece, so it is possible to select them as appropriate. In contrast, in German suites, the first few movements are thematically related, and dances are often inserted between the sarabande and gigue, so the number of movements tends to be fixed. In J. S. Bach's Cello Suite and English Suite, the style of the dances is close to that of France, but the basic structure of the suite is German. In Italy, the "chamber sonata" including dance movements had already developed from the mid-17th century, and as the sonata spread throughout Europe in the 18th century, suites gradually fell into silence. The orchestral suites of the time also differed from the standard type mentioned above, and were heavily influenced by Lully's ballet music (excerpts of which were performed during the interludes of operas and before Louis XIV). They consisted of an overture followed by various dances, such as Handel's Water Music and Telemann's Nations Then and Now.

In the mid-19th century, suites, which had disappeared in favor of sonatas and symphonies, became the subject of renewed interest. For example, they imitated baroque suites, but with virtuosity on the cello (Saint-Saëns's Suite for Cello and Piano, Op. 16) or used twelve-tone technique (Schoenberg's Suite, Op. 25). Or composers themselves released a few excerpts from operas and ballets (Bizet's Les Amoursées, Grieg's Peer Gynt, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty, etc.). By the 1880s, they were no longer rare. Titled works were the most numerous, such as Massenet's Hungarian Scenes, Bizet's Children's Games, and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. At the end of the 19th century, exotic and ethnically colored works were popular (Saint-Saëns's Suite Algerien, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, etc.). Berg's Suite Lyrica for string quartet (1926) was named after the tempo of each movement.

西洋音楽の器楽曲の形式。(1)バロック時代の組曲は、同一の調性による数楽章（多くは舞曲）からなる器楽曲。一般にはアルマンド、クーラント、サラバンド、ジーグの4種の舞曲に、さまざまな舞曲や標題のついた曲が加わる。(2)1850年以降は、オペラやバレエの抜粋や、標題をもつ曲を一まとめにした作品などを示すことばとなった。

　組曲ということばの定着は1790年代と意外に遅く、それまでは舞曲名を並記していた。また、ordre（オルドル）、pièce de clavecin（クラブサン組曲）、partita（パルティータ）などの名称も並行して用いられている。しかし、いくつかの舞曲を続けるという発想自体は14世紀ごろから存在しており、16世紀には静かな2拍子系の舞曲と活発な3拍子系の舞曲の一対が好まれた（たとえば、パバーヌとガイヤルド）。イタリアのリュート曲にはさらに3種、4種の組合せもある。1610年代のドイツでは、同じ数の舞曲をつねに同じ順序で並べた器楽合奏曲集が次々と出版された。しかし、17世紀に流行した新しいタイプの舞曲のなかからアルマンド、クーラント、サラバンドという組合せを定着させたのは、フランスのリュート奏者たちであった。1650年ごろには、これにジーグが加わる。この4種の組合せは、フランスのクラブサン奏者（シャンボニエール、ルイおよびフランソア・クープラン、ラモー）が愛好し、フローベルガーを通じてドイツにも広まり、組曲のもっとも標準的な型となった。しかし、フランスの組曲は、前奏曲と複数のクーラントをもち、ジーグのあとにさまざまな曲が続き、メヌエットやシャコンヌで終わる。挿入曲の数は一定せず、また各曲間の関係もないので、適宜取捨選択することも可能であった。これに対してドイツの場合は、初めの数楽章に主題の関連があり、サラバンドとジーグの間に舞曲が挿入されることが多く、楽章数は一定になる傾向が強い。J・S・バッハの『チェロ組曲』や『イギリス組曲』では、舞曲の様式はフランスに近いが、組曲の基本的構造はドイツ式である。イタリアではすでに17世紀中ごろから舞曲楽章を含む「室内ソナタ」が発達しており、18世紀にソナタが全ヨーロッパに広まるにつれて、組曲はしだいに沈黙していった。なお、当時の管弦楽用組曲も前述の標準型とは異なり、リュリのバレエ音楽（その抜粋がオペラの幕間やルイ14世の前で演奏された）の影響が強い。序曲のあとにさまざまな舞曲が続くもので、ヘンデルの『水上の音楽』やテレマンの『昔と今の諸国民』などがある。

　19世紀中ごろ、それまでソナタや交響曲の前に姿を消していた組曲が新たな興味の対象となる。たとえば、バロックの組曲を模倣しながらもチェロに名人芸を発揮させたり（サン・サーンスの『チェロとピアノのための組曲』作品16）、十二音技法を用いたりする（シェーンベルクの『組曲』作品25）。あるいはオペラやバレエから作曲家自身が数曲を抜粋して発表する（ビゼーの『アルルの女』、グリーグの『ペール・ギュント』、チャイコフスキーの『くるみ割り人形』と『眠りの森の美女』など）。そして1880年代には、もはや珍しい存在ではない。もっとも数が多いのは、標題をもつ作品で、マスネの『ハンガリーの情景』、ビゼーの『子供の遊び』、ムソルグスキーの『展覧会の絵』などがある。また19世紀の末には、異国情緒や民族色の強い作品が好んで作曲された（サン・サーンスの『アルジェリア組曲』、リムスキー・コルサコフの『シェヘラザード』など）。なお、ベルクの弦楽四重奏のための『叙情組曲』（1926）は、各楽章のテンポにちなんでつけられた名称である。
