Wakayama City is located in the northwestern tip of Wakayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. It is the prefectural capital. It includes the Wakayama Plain downstream of the Kino River, the southern slope of the Izumi Mountains, and Tomogashima Island in the Kitan Strait. The central city is on the left bank of the Kino River estuary. In the Middle Ages, it was a stopover point for water transport on the Kino River and coastal shipping routes, but its origins as a city lie in the castle town of Wakayama Castle, which was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi near the mouth of the Kino River. After Tokugawa Yorinobu entered the city in 1619, it prospered as a castle town of the Kishu clan with 555,000 koku of rice throughout the Edo period, and cotton cultivation was also thriving. Although it was damaged in World War II, after the war it developed into a heavy chemical industry city, mainly steel and chemicals. The spinning and dyeing industries, mainly cotton flannel, lumbering and woodworking such as Yoshino cedar, and leather industries, which had been active since before the war, are also active. With the opening of the New Kansai International Airport, efforts are being made to attract high-tech industries. The city is served by the Hanwa Line, Kisei Main Line, Wakayama Line, Nankai Electric Railway lines, Wakayama Electric Railway, the Hanwa Expressway, and regular shipping routes to Tokushima. Rice, mandarin oranges, and persimmons are cultivated in the surrounding area. Wakayama Castle (historic site), Iwase Senzuka Burial Mounds (special historic site), Wakaura, Kimiidera, Wakayama University, and the Prefectural Medical University are all located here. The Tomogashima and Kada areas are national vacation villages and belong to the Setonaikai National Park. Area: 208.84 km2 . Population: 370,364 (2010). →Related topics Wakayama Prefecture | Wakayama University Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
